No Bones About It
Animals Shouldn’t be Given as Holiday Gifts!

By Toni Anselmo-Napier

The holidays often conjure visions of a cute little puppy in a basket with a big red bow or the kitten hanging in the stocking while you anticipate the looks on your loved ones’ faces when they see their new gift. Giving an animal to your friends and family is not the right choice. Animals represent wonderment, innocence, unconditional love and hope for the future. These are the sort of gifts many of us wish we were able to give one another. They are symbolic of the spirit of the holiday celebration, but you really need to ask yourself, “Is a pet really a great holiday gift?”

Pets should never be an impulse purchase. Although they are cute, cuddly and seem irresistible, as many as half of these holiday pets go from the gift box to the animal shelter within six months. If you or anyone you know is thinking about giving a pet for a holiday gift, please remember that the pet will require much more than love and that it’s a lifelong commitment. The puppy you give to your two-year-old may still be with you when he goes go to college.

A Safe Holiday Season!
By: Brian Truskey

Here, Honey; you might hurt yourself. Let me get that for you.” Sound familiar, ladies? When I was asked to write about holiday safety tips from a man’s perspective, I can’t say I was thrilled. The truth is, half the time we don’t know what we’re talking about. Sometimes we luck out, sometimes it even sounds good, but most of us just try ‘til we stumble into the answer. Sometimes, we fail to obtain a suitable solution, resulting in a less-than-ideal outcome (i.e., it gets broken). So, to avoid any scorched outlets or falling ladders this winter, we went to the experts for a few tips on how to stay safe during the holiday season.

Citizen of the Year: Tom Rushing
By: Jessica Jeffress

When you meet and talk to Murray Mayor Tommy Rushing, it’s easy to see why he is in the position he is. He’s charismatic, easy to talk to and, even though he has been quite successful in office, he has remained humble. It could be because participating in city government is in his blood.

“My dad, who died while I was still quite young, was involved in city government,” Rushing explained. “I remember many things he told me, but one that stood out was, ‘If you ever grow up, you need to serve Murray—it’s a great place to live.’”

This sentiment stuck with Rushing throughout his life. Born and raised in Murray, he graduated from Murray State University, where he played baseball and was a member of a fraternity. He became an educator, working in the county for 10 years, nine of which he served as principal.

Murray LifeStudy Abroad for Adults
By Celia Wall

For years now, you have been thinking about taking that dream trip overseas. Maybe you’ve always wanted to visit Ireland where your great grandmother was born or Scotland because you’re a fan of single malts and golf.

You enjoy the theatre and would love to see Phantom of the Opera in the West End Theatre District of London.

Maybe your daydreams head off in another direction. India. Belize. Australia, perhaps. Ah, there’s a land of beauty with impressive cities, amazing landscapes, lovely beaches, and, of course, the Great Barrier Reef.
Wherever your daydreams take you, maybe it’s time to make those dreams a reality.

Murray LifeMeeting Montage
By: Darlisha Stanfield

Each month, in a large room filled with books and a computer, on the second floor of their home, Chuck and Margaret Shuffett are laying out their masterpiece—Montage magazine. From history and trivia to “Table Talk” and “Talk of the Town,” Montage gives readers variety with a historic perspective.

Chuck's media career began in Glasgow, Ky., in 1949. After 40 years in radio, Chuck left the industry and created Montage. Montage was first presented in newspaper format in 1992. In 1995, Chuck and Margaret shifted Montage from newspaper style to the magazine format which is used today. After being told their publication would not hold up in the market, Chuck's goal for the publication was survival. “We wanted to get the first issue out and survive to get a second out,” said Chuck. The publication did make it through those first couple of issues and, with the same goal in mind, it is now approaching its fourteenth year having published more than 150 issues. Montage magazine has definitely made its mark on Murray.
